Presently, Evelyn is retired from Venice High School, where
she was a baker for 1,000 students on a daily basis. As
many of you know, her father had his own bakery. He was a
top-notch baker, and while growing up, Evelyn hated the
whole business. So what happened? Evelyn got a job baking
cookies, cakes, brownies, pies, etc., and surprisingly, grew
to love the profession. She recently sold her home and
moved into a condo. She didn't need a large house since her
husband passed away 8 years ago.
How has Evelyn changed? She says, "More than ever, I try to
accept life as it is dealt to me". She and Nick left New
Jersey in 1967, and moved to Lake George, New York. They
owned and operated a 42 unit motel, cottages and
efficiencies on 240 feet of the lake's prime beach front.
They were there for 10 years, and then moved to Venice,
Florida upon her husband's retirement. Three of her four
children went with them. The fourth, Ronnie, stayed in the
Lake George area as she was working as an art teacher.
Evelyn's hobbies are sewing, crafts, swimming and boating.
She also served as President of the Professional Business
Women's Association.
Special achievements would be her award for teaching
special education children and a Heart of the Kitchen Award
from Venice High School.
Evelyn has an embarrassing moment ingrained in her brain.
One afternoon, after work, she went on an errand and then
returned to her maroon Oldsmobile in the parking lot. She
noticed marks on the ledge as though someone had used an ice
pick and repeatedly hit the trim. Knowing that her
husband would be furious at the vandalism, she unlocked the
car and got in. Things felt a bit odd, but she put the key
in the ignition and began to back out of the parking space.
All of a sudden a man started banging on her window. She
stopped the car, rolled the window down and said, "What
seems to be the problem?". He replied, "The problem is
you're in MY CAR!". Later her husband explained that one in
every 1,000 keys fits someone else's car. Wouldn't you
know that a match to her key was another maroon Oldsmobile!
In the same parking lot, no less!!! And, thank goodness the
other driver got to her before the police came after her
with sirens blaring.
