Shirley was a stay-at-home
mother until her youngest started school. She then got a
job working for the Volusia County School Board. Larry
worked for Southern Bell. In 1972 they had the opportunity
to meet Arthur Jones, the inventor of the Nautilus exercise
machines. They also met Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold and
many other bodybuilders visited their home on many
occasions, it was a very interesting time.
Shirley says they became hooked
on health, so they retired from their jobs in 1983 and
opened an exercise gym which they operated for the next 20
years. In 2001 they retired and sold their house and
business, but their hobby is still trying to stay fit and
healthy. Shirley enjoys her children and
grandkids and spends a lot of time fishing and beaching with
them.
As far as unforgettable moments
go, marrying my husband and experiencing all of life's
adventures has been pretty unforgettable in and of itself. I
did have a special moment when I found out one of our
classmates, Fran Rosenfeld, lives in this tiny town of
Deland. She's been here 15 years, and we wonder how many
times we passed each other on the street. But, we've made
up for lost time and see each other often. Shirley now lives in an
apartment complex, and is enjoying life with Larry very
much.
